Today’s NHL 21 is about speed, skill, and youth. At age 30, grandmasters wonder how much time a player has left before the big decline. Tough veterans are being yanked from their contracts and replaced with guys on entry-level contracts who can do things with the puck that will blow your mind. But if we’ve learned anything from the recent Stanley Cup champions, it’s that there’s room for old-school hockey and veteran presence. The same can be said for the NHL hockey video game. You don’t play in the NHL anymore, you play against Chela. The mouthguard does not fit in the mouth to protect the teeth, it is a chew toy. For someone who will turn 40 before the end of next season, it’s a balancing act between loving the gameplay (which NHL 21 is better than ever) and hating the gimmicks aimed at a younger audience. EA Vancouver may be focusing on the positive side of things lately, but they’re still paying attention to the traditions of the past.
My main mode is to Be professional. I played my sixth or seventh season of NHL 20 for hundreds of hours. That experience was missing in many ways, so I was excited to dive into Be the Pro in NHL 21 and see how things have changed. From the beginning, Be a Pro now has some narrative. The videos show his agent conducting interviews on his behalf, talking about his potential and the upcoming draft. Throughout your career, you will meet frequently with teammates, coaches, the general manager, the media, and your agent, building relationships and developing a reputation among fans (of your brand), management, and teammates.

Players can also earn specialization points and traits to customize their pro, as well as earn money to purchase cosmetics like a scooter. In theory, this is fine, but I’m not sure why my professional ownership of a scooter, or a sports car, or whatever, affects performance. This is where it all became a little pointless for me. Before and during games, the coach and teammates will challenge the players to complete tasks, and they can choose to play it safely or promise them big results, like a goal. Success will improve your reputation, but failure will jeopardize it. It feels good to promise a goal and deliver on it, or even play it safe and secure victory. So EA Vancouver has the start of something great, but right now it’s a bit one-dimensional.
Little attention is paid to players who want to learn the finer aspects of hockey. The presentation has taken on a new look this year with the Be a Pro update, but it continues to evolve with feedback. As expected, Ray and James have more lines, but now they have women as commentators. Carlyne Beth will chime in from time to time, although she is only a guest and not very often. It’s a small step in the right direction, but it’s not enough, so let’s hope NHL 22 does better.
Gameplay
The real star of NHL 21, as it should be, is the gameplay. The only thing they had to do right was for EA Vancouver to do it right, and I’m not talking about the decks. The overall gameplay in NHL 21 is better than in NHL 20, and even that was pretty good advocates are much more human in their decision-making. They retreat less and advance more, cutting off entrances to zones and generally giving the player less time to think. On offense, I notice my teammates opening up to pass or looking for opportunities in the offensive zone.
The goalie controls don’t seem to have changed much (if at all), but the AI and animations have been improved. This is most noticeable in practice games on the goal side, where improved animations allow goalies to react faster and recover loose pucks in their zone. Finally, for the more skilled players, there are players like Michigan or Kucherov, and also some bottom-six forwards, such as those who bounce the puck off the boards or around a defenseman.
