protagonist On a picture-perfect, tropical beach, Nik [olas]—almost grown up and 17 years old—lives with his grandfather Erasmus in a tastefully decorated old shipwreck. Nik’s grandpa, a very amiable but slightly insane old man whom Nik adores, reared him because his father, who is sometimes absent, only occasionally visits him. Nik hardly knows his mother. He has no memory of her at all, other than the odd dreams of a nice woman.

Nik has up to now led a pretty safe existence, mostly by organizing his days on his own. This immediately changes when a stranger enters the scene and engages Erasmus in a contentious conversation that leads to their both disappearing. Nik is abruptly forced to leave everything he knows behind in order to look for hints, and he embarks on a quest to find his grandpa.
